Self-Love 101

Have you ever?

Have you ever got upset that someone was not loving you the way you wanted to be loved? Have you expected someone to understand the way you receive love? How frustrating it must be, because it feels like no one gets you. You would go above and beyond for someone, and would not feel even half in return? Self-love is a powerful thing. From not knowing how to love myself, to overflowing my cup with love on a daily basis, here is how I did it:

With and without.

Without loving myself, it looks like I am looking for attention from others at any cost. I am expecting others to love me the way I want to be loved, and getting frustrated because they don’t even consider how I should be loved. I was attracting the wrong people and ended up worse than I began.

Me loving myself looks like understanding what self-love really is. I was taking the tools and practicing on myself. I even take myself on dates. My favorite date with myself is dinner and a movie, and sometimes shopping.

Picture this…

My biggest love was the love of my nephews. Imagine loving myself the way I love them and stronger. When my oldest nephew was born, he brightened my heart. That was my boy! I took him everywhere with me. Then, my second nephew came, and he just melted my heart. A Tia’ and nephew love is a different kind of love. As of today we add a niece love, no one warned me about this one. They revealed a piece of me I didn’t even know existed. Imagine having that same love for yourself.

I loved myself, but not in an obsessed, crazy, fanatic way, but in a healthy, admirable way. It’s the kind of love where you will not let others get in the way of your joy. The kind of love where you do not need others to validate your beauty, your ability, or your strength. The kind of love where you will do anything to make sure you are good. That is a different level of self-love that I am on my way to.

One thing that has helped my journey is speaking my love language to myself. First, I had to understand what that even is, then I studied the various kinds. I practiced on the ones around me and then practiced on myself. Since I was young, it was always said to me that no one can love me better than I can love myself. I thought I was doing an ok job with loving myself until my boys showed me that I could take it to another level.

The five love languages are physical touch, words of affirmation, quality time, acts of services, and receiving gifts. You can take the 5 love languages test at www.5lovelanguages.com

Psalm 139:14

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Thank you Jesus for creating me to be wonderfully made. Thank you Lord for showing me how to love me like you love me. Thank you for showing me how to be gentle with myself. I ask that you give me the consistency in taking care of me mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally, in Jesus name we pray, Amen.
